Why re-reading is almost useless — and what works instead

Most people study the way they learned to study at school: read it again, highlight it, summarise the notes. The research on memory and retention is clear that most of these strategies produce very little durable learning. This lesson explains why — and what to replace them with.

The illusion of fluency

When you re-read a text, it feels familiar. The words come easily, the ideas seem clear, you finish each page without confusion. This ease is mistaken for learning. In reality, it is recognition — a shallow form of memory that confirms you have seen this before, but does not mean you can recall it later, explain it to someone else, or apply it in a new context.

Cognitive psychologists call this the fluency illusion. Research by Nate Kornell and Robert Bjork found that students who re-read material rated their own learning more highly than students who had studied using retrieval practice — but the retrieval-practice group consistently outperformed them on later tests. Feeling like you know something is not the same as knowing it.

The testing effect: retrieval practice

The most robust finding in the scientific literature on memory is what researchers call the testing effect, or retrieval practice effect. Studies by Roediger and Karpicke (2006) showed that students who took a test after reading a passage retained significantly more information one week later than students who spent the same time re-reading. Not a small difference: students who re-read recalled about 40% on a one-week delayed test; students who had tested themselves recalled about 61% — half as much again, from the same time spent.

The mechanism is what makes this counterintuitive. The act of trying to recall something — even unsuccessfully — strengthens the memory trace more effectively than passively re-reading it. Every time you retrieve a piece of information, you reconsolidate it, making it more robust. Every time you re-read without retrieval, you get a shallow reactivation that fades quickly.

Passive strategies that feel productive but are not

Highlighting is perhaps the most common example. It feels like active engagement. In practice, it requires almost no cognitive effort — you are deciding that something is important without forcing yourself to process why or how it connects to other things you know. Studies consistently show that highlighters perform no better on retention tests than non-highlighters, and sometimes worse, because the highlighting gave a false sense of having done the work.

Summarising notes has a better track record than re-reading, particularly if you are forced to condense information into your own words rather than copying it. But even good note-taking is primarily an encoding strategy: it helps you understand material when you first encounter it, but does not replace the retrieval practice that consolidates it for later use. Notes are only as useful as what you do with them afterwards.

Recognition versus recall

The distinction between recognition and recall is critical for anyone studying for something they will need to use. Recognising an answer when you see it among options (multiple choice) is a much lower-order skill than being able to recall it from nothing. Most real-world uses of knowledge require recall: explaining something in a meeting, writing an argument, applying a principle to a novel situation. Studying in a way that only develops recognition is studying for the wrong test.
